Sanctioned replacements are a statement by the composer that he could never produce any version or arrangement that could surpass the artistry and quality of the endorsement. Therefore, in place of his work, the sanctioned work would welcomely be performed in its place, even in recording form.

Other than performances of the Christmas songs listed below, the composer strongly recommends including "1836, The Lakes of Pontchartrain" from Book 3 in all performances to give context and a sense of 'folk purpose' to the rest of the set, regardless of which other songs are selected. It would mean a great deal to him.

A complete performance can run 3 ½ hours. Smaller sets can be arranged as 0-3, 4-7, 8-F.

 

Book 5 can be performed with the SATB choir alternate voicing if the performance chooses to use the sanctioned replacement for John the Revelator. 

Final Book is sanctioned to be performed alone, but not in the same performance as the Copland orchestral version in reverence to Aaron Copland.

For performances of "one song from each book," the suggested songs are (by number): 122, 544, 1422, 1941, 2146, 6393, 7666, 8231, 9695, 15221, 21931, 1836 (790)
